Cain's OIE model works. In previous CW classes, there is an emphasis on identifying what works in the story and what doesn't. Though, in a way, these methods have indeed helped in revisions of stories, but I somewhat felt it was a bit lacking on my part. Maybe it's a me-problem. I have come to realize, after reading Cain's article, that there is power in just observing. More than just an opinion, the observations of the reader can help the writer realize unconscious practices they do, and then figure out how to make it work. This surprised me how such a simple task of pointing something menial out can in fact contribute to the overall experience of evaluating literary works.
