Gab's thoughts on the OIE Model

by Gab Padilla

The main tenets of the article refer to a multifaceted approach in understanding not only the author’s intentions and interpretations in their texts, but also the nuances that they either intentionally or unintentionally included when writing. Multifaceted in a sense where instead of simply sticking to the author’s specific and intended narrative, it also tries to understand everything that is written by the author and the circumstances of what the author had experienced which they incorporated in their works. Why are some passages different to what the author had already intended early on, why do the author follow the style or words, and what are the possible interpretations we could imagine the author has unintendedly included in his words. Instead of establishing a clear adaptation based from the majority or the author itself, this method tries to identify possible interpretations understood by people, and then make sense of it whether the interpretation converges into the author’s intention or does it expand or open up more to the message the text held. It depends on what the interpretations are; however, this method helps not only explore or assume possibilities behind every nuances, it also allows students to challenge their adaptations, and open up to what the peers had in mind.

Although I was not really taught about this method, I was able to experience the process firsthand during our CL 150 class last year. The process goes: we read the stories and texts, and then, we make sense of every nuance the author had written within and connect what those nuances could be to the whole narrative. Lastly, we then share our thoughts and interpretations to the class and determine which closely resembles to the author itself or which interpretation is a possibility. This experience actually helped me explore possible meanings I could include whenever I write poems. What words or styles I could use that inhibit double meanings, but most importantly, it helped me contextualize how written texts could be understood instead of simply sticking to the main narrative. While it is tedious and could be confusing, the many interpretations were insightful in how texts are understood by others.
